After many years of anxiety, over 1,000 members witnessed the
dedication of Chelston main church. This took place on Saturday, 4
September, 2010. District Apostle Charles Ndandula was accompanied
to Chelstone by Apostles Akombaetwa Samalama, Aaron Katungu and area
Apostle Stanley Munsaka.
For the service the District Apostle read a text word from Mathew
21:14:
“Then the blind and the lame came to him in the temple and he healed
them.”
During the service he retired 2 District Elders and 1 District
Evangelist and ordained 3 District Elders and 3 District
Evangelists. 10 visitors and 1,465 members attended the service.
After the service there was a choral presentation by the youth and
children’s choir. This beautiful church building will be the venue
for the Choral concert during the Chief Apostle Leber’s visit to
Zambia in October, 2010.
The New Apostolic Church doctrine was established in Chelston area
in 1966 by Deacon Maxwell Kabumbwe Banda. Deacon Banda came to
Lusaka on transfer for work from Kabumbwe in Choma. The first divine
service took place in the house of the Deacon near the Lusaka
International airport.
In 1968, the Deacon was shifted to another house in Chelston
opposite Chelston Clinic and the congregation too shifted to this
new area, until the members increased and they could no longer
congregate in the Deacon’s house. A bigger premises had to be found
and this was Brother Timothy Muchanga’s residence in Chelston.
The following year in 1969, the congregation asked for permission to
hold divine services at Chakunkula Primary school and permission was
granted for them to use one classroom.
The first sealing service was conducted by District Apostle Andrew
Fernandes in which 130 members out the 150 members that attended
were adopted and sealed with the Holy Spirit. During this same
service Deacon Maxwell Banda was ordained as Priest and appointed
Rector for the congregation. A plot was later granted by the
government at which time membership was at 170.
The first chapel was started in 1974 and completed in July, 1977 and
was dedicated by District Apostle Fernandes.
The membership during the period 1980-1986 grew to 860 members and
in 1989 retired District Apostle Duncan Mfune allowed for the
expansion of the church and was this was completed in 1990.
The construction of the new building commenced in 1992 when the
membership had grown from 860 to 2,500.
From September, 1992 under the care of Apostle Stanley Munsaka and
assisted by Bishop Joseph Muchimba, another foundation was laid for
a bigger church. In 1996 three other congregations were opened in
Chelston township namely, Chelston Green Palm Drive and Obama
Congregation as the main Chelston church building could not
accommodate all the members and hence the initiation of a bigger
church building which was to accommodate all the members.
